Sony Pictures released the first full trailer for Jumanji: Open World on July 28, confirming Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan will return for the fifth and final film in the franchise this Christmas.

TL;DR

  • Sony dropped the Jumanji: Open World trailer on July 28, 2026.
  • Johnson, Black, Hart and Gillan reprise their video-game avatar roles for a third time.
  • The plot flips the series' premise: the game escapes into the real world instead of players being pulled into it.
  • The film opens in UK and US cinemas on December 25, 2026.

What the trailer shows

Director Jake Kasdan returns for the film, which picks up from the mid-credits cliffhanger of 2019's Jumanji: The Next Level. Instead of characters being sucked into the game, the avatars — and the game's creatures — break out into the real world, and this time they are stuck in "demo mode."

The footage opens with Spencer Gilpin (Alex Wolff) at a family gathering when a rhinoceros crashes through the building, according to AOL. From there, Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson), Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon (Black), Franklin "Mouse" Finbar (Hart) and Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan) reappear to confront the chaos.

Announcing the trailer on X, Johnson (@TheRock) wrote a short, punchy tagline framing the film as the series' send-off, alongside the exclusive Christmas Day release date, X, July 28, 2026.

A returning ensemble, plus new faces

Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Rhys Darby and Danny DeVito all reprise supporting roles, according to The Week. Newcomers Burn Gorman, Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes join the cast for this instalment.

Kasdan co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Matt Tolmach and Kasdan produce.

UK release date confirmed

Jumanji: Open World is scheduled to open in UK cinemas on December 25, 2026, the same day as its US debut, according to release-tracking data from MovieReleaseRadar. The film has not yet received a BBFC classification; Sony's previous two instalments in the franchise were both rated PG in the UK.

Box office pedigree

The two prior films in the modern trilogy, Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and The Next Level (2019), combined for more than $1.7 billion worldwide, according to Variety.

Release date shuffle

The film was originally dated for December 11, 2026, before Sony moved it to Christmas Day, positioning it just after the December 18 openings of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday — a stretch some fans have nicknamed "Dunesday," per Variety.
