Matthew McConaughey has again denied rumours that he turned down Titanic's lead role, telling the Bright Side podcast last year he auditioned for Jack Dawson opposite Kate Winslet but was simply never offered the part.

TL;DR

  • McConaughey addressed the long-running "Titanic" rumour on Hello Sunshine's "The Bright Side" podcast.
  • He said his read with Kate Winslet went well but he was never offered the role of Jack Dawson.
  • Late producer Jon Landau's upcoming memoir claims McConaughey's Southern accent was a factor in the casting decision.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio ultimately won the part in the 1997 film, which went on to gross more than $2 billion worldwide.

What McConaughey said about his Titanic audition

Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey addressed the persistent rumour during an appearance on Hello Sunshine's "The Bright Side" podcast, saying reports that he had turned down an offer over his accent were simply untrue.

"I had a great read with Kate Winslet and the producers," McConaughey said, according to Fox News. He felt confident he had landed the part, but the call never came.

McConaughey recalled asking James Cameron directly to confirm he had never been offered the role, finally settling years of confusion over who was responsible for the casting outcome.Matthew McConaughey. Rodin Eckenroth/Getty

A producer's memoir tells a different story

An excerpt of Titanic producer Jon Landau's upcoming posthumous memoir, "The Bigger Picture," was published via Matthew Belloni's What I'm Hearing newsletter on Puck. According to the excerpt, Kate Winslet was taken with McConaughey's presence during their chemistry read.

Landau's account states Cameron then asked McConaughey to try the same scene without his natural Texas drawl. McConaughey reportedly shut the request down, replying, "That was pretty good. Thanks."

Representatives for McConaughey and Cameron reportedly did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the memoir's account.

UK box office: how Titanic dominated after a record January release

Titanic didn't reach UK cinemas until January 1998, arriving after its US debut and immediately breaking a long-standing record.

The opening set a record for a January release at the time, beating the previous mark held by "Bram Stoker's Dracula."

Why the rumour persisted for years

The confusion reportedly took hold after Leonardo DiCaprio, who ultimately played Jack Dawson, became an international star off the back of the role. Rumours that McConaughey had turned it down circulated for years afterward.

McConaughey has pushed back on the story in multiple interviews dating back to at least 2018, consistently maintaining the same account: he auditioned, felt confident, and was never called back.

The clarification lands as McConaughey returns to the spotlight for other reasons — he released a new bluegrass single, "Quill," ahead of his film "The Rivals of Amziah King," which opens in cinemas today.
