Horror author Stephen King just gave The Cycle the kind of endorsement filmmakers dream about. The 79-year-old's blurb, comparing the movie to The Thing crossed with The Silence of the Lambs, headlines the new trailer for director Jordan Downey's Shudder film, which arrives October 23. Here's everything you need to know about the cold-case creature feature starring actor Deborah Ann Woll, from the cast to the release date.

What the Trailer Actually Shows
The trailer opens on a lone wooden house deep in a forest, with a rainstorm rumbling outside. Meg wakes to a noise in the dark, grabs a shotgun and follows it, only to freeze at something the camera never shows. Then her father appears on screen.
"It's coming for me," he says, according to ComingSoon. Four words, and the dread lands.
From there, the footage shifts to the daylight investigation. Meg walks fellow officers through a grisly crime scene, and a cop reveals that three people were brutally murdered in a nearby town, including her father. The eerie imagery that follows hints at something far more sinister than a standard cold case.
That mystery is only the beginning.
The Plot and Who's in the Cast
According to the official synopsis, a man missing for 36 years turns up at the scene of a horrific crime, and his estranged daughter must unravel his dark past. Downey, who previously made The Head Hunter and directed the "Stork" segment of V/H/S/Beyond, has described the setting as a foggy, dreary small town. Something supernatural creeps beneath the surface while the people stay real and relatable, he told iHorror in September 2026.
Woll, best known as Karen Page in Marvel's Daredevil, leads a big ensemble. The cast includes Jeffrey Donovan, Will Hochman, Jack Doolan, Carl W. Crudup, Jeb Berrier, Gretchen Corbett and David Myers Gregory, per Fangoria. Donovan plays Marks, a father whose loss of his son drives him toward the creature in the woods.
Meg, though, is no typical horror victim.
"Her smarty pants is her superpower," Woll said in a September 2026 interview with iHorror. The 41-year-old actor described the character as a scientist who sees the monster as a specimen to study, and who finds agency by stepping toward the threat instead of running from it. It's a refreshing twist on the genre's run-and-scream formula.
That scientist's-eye view is a big part of why King is paying attention.
Why Stephen King Is Backing the Film
The trailer carries a blurb straight from the source. "A terrific fright flick," King said in the new footage, per iHorror. Praise like that doesn't attach itself to every streaming release, and it gives The Cycle a serious head start this spooky season.
King didn't work on the film. Neither did horror veteran Mick Garris, who also appears in the trailer to praise the movie as a gleefully over-the-top showcase for practical effects. Both are fans, and they happen to be very loud ones.
The admiration runs both ways. Downey has called the movie a love letter to King, which makes the trailer feel a bit like a reply. (The small-town-with-a-secret setup is very King territory.)
Critics who saw it at the festival seem to agree.
What Early Reviews Are Saying
The Cycle premiered at Fantastic Fest 2026, and it currently holds a 100% Tomatometer score based on 10 critic reviews (as of ComingSoon's report). Bloody Disgusting's festival review singled out Patrick Magee's creature work as a highlight, especially in the second half, per iHorror.
The film's scariest moment, according to its director, has nothing to do with the monster. Downey said a dialogue-heavy morgue scene, shot in a single day and packed with science exposition, worried him far more than the creature. That's a promising sign for a mystery built on character as much as gore.
So when can you see it?
