Threads isn't just videos. The platform hosts photos, GIFs, carousels with multiple images, short audio clips, Reels, and Stories — and none of it comes with a native download button. The built-in save option is a bookmark that points back to the original post, not a way to get files onto your device.
This guide covers how to save from Threads regardless of content type — what you get for each one and what to expect.
One Process, Every Content Type
The method is the same regardless of what you're trying to save: copy the post link, paste it into a browser-based downloader, and the tool detects the content type automatically. You don't need to specify whether it's a video, a photo, or a GIF. Paste the link and the downloader figures out what's there.
What changes is the format of the output file.
Videos — MP4 in Original Quality
Videos download as MP4 files at whatever resolution was uploaded to Threads. Typically 720p or 1080p for most content, occasionally higher or lower depending on what the creator uploaded. The file plays in any video player and imports cleanly into editing apps.
Voice posts — short audio recordings that some creators post directly — also come through as audio files. Some downloaders offer MP3 extraction for any video that has a sound track.
Photos — JPG at Full Resolution
Photos download as JPG files in the resolution the creator uploaded. The difference between a downloaded JPG and a screenshot is significant: a screenshot is capped at your screen resolution and goes through your device's compression algorithm. A downloaded JPG is the original file — sharper, especially for content with text or fine detail.
GIFs — The Surprising Format
GIFs on Threads look like traditional animated GIFs — they loop automatically with no play button. But Threads stores them as short MP4 files with no audio track. When you download a GIF from Threads, you'll typically get an MP4 rather than a .gif file.
In practice this makes no difference for most uses. Short looping MP4s play identically to GIFs in WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, Discord, and most other platforms. If you specifically need a .gif extension for a website or tool that requires it, you can convert the MP4 afterward — but for sharing in chat apps, the MP4 works the same way.
Carousels — All Items From One Link
Carousel posts contain multiple photos or a mix of photos and videos in a single swipeable post. When you paste a carousel link into a downloader, it detects all the media in the post and offers each item as a separate download.
This is significantly faster than screenshotting each image individually — and produces better quality files, since each item downloads as the original rather than a screenshot.
Reels — Same as Video
Reels on Threads are short vertical videos. The download process is identical to regular videos. One additional note: some Reels on Threads are cross-posted from Instagram. In these cases, Threads hosts its own copy of the file, so you use the Threads post link rather than any Instagram link. The downloader fetches from Threads' servers regardless.
Stories — Available While They're Live
Stories are time-limited — they expire after a period set by the creator. As long as a Story is still publicly accessible, it can be saved the same way as any other post. Once it expires, the link stops working. If you want to save a Story, do it while it's live.

Step 1 — Copy the post link

Where Files Go After Downloading

iPhone: after tapping download in Safari, choose Save Video for the file to go directly to Photos, or Save to Files for the Files app.
Desktop: your browser's default downloads folder — typically Downloads on both Windows and Mac.
One Consistent Limitation
All of this applies to public posts only. Private accounts require authentication, and a downloader doesn't have your login credentials. Content from private accounts isn't accessible to any external tool — which is the expected behavior from a privacy standpoint.
