Meet Leonard and Mae Sandler

Hahn and Sandler welcomed their first child, Leonard, in October 2006, according to Romper. Their daughter, Mae, followed in 2009 — three years behind her big brother. The siblings are now a young adult and a high schooler, and they've grown up in a close-knit household that rarely makes headlines.

The story, of course, starts well before either child arrived.

How Hahn and Sandler Became Parents

Hahn and Sandler first crossed paths studying theater at Northwestern University, per Sportskeeda. They married in 2002, and both went on to build careers in entertainment.

Sandler, 53, is an actor, writer and producer whose credits include My Boys and New Girl. Hahn trained at the Yale School of Drama before becoming a fan favorite in Transparent, WandaVision and the Bad Moms films alongside Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell.

Two busy careers made family balance a constant topic.

Raising Kids Outside the Spotlight

Despite Hollywood fame, Hahn has long described a grounded home life. She told Parade in 2018 that she has "cute kids and a hubby forever and two dogs and a rabbit," plus a hamster by then.

That candid snapshot paints a pretty ordinary picture — and it's exactly how Hahn says she likes it. (More on how she keeps work and home separate below.)

Even when the kids were small, Hahn was juggling set schedules with parenthood. She told Northwestern's alumni magazine in 2011 that "it's a little complicated with children," though they were young enough to travel with her, per Northwestern magazine.

Mae also inspired one of Hahn's creative projects. Hahn co-wrote My Wish for You with her daughter, an idea that came from bedtime conversations in which Mae shared her unfiltered thoughts, per TODAY.

As the kids got older, the road trips thinned out. Hahn told The Cut that her teens no longer join her on location as often, per Romper.

What Hahn Has Shared About Her Teens

Hahn has become a relatable voice on parenting teenagers. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2024, she joked about life with a teen daughter, per PEOPLE.

"It is a hormone hot box between me and my daughter," Hahn shared, chatting with host Drew Barrymore.

It's a funny, warm moment — and a very rare peek behind the curtain.

Hahn also joked that having a teenage son feels like a toxic relationship, a line she credited to Tina Fey. She then opened up about Leonard heading to college, a milestone she described as emotional.

Mae has shown plenty of support too. She made her mom a charcuterie plate before the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Hahn gave her a public shout-out. And Leonard? He thinks his mom's WandaVision role is a little cool, but he won't fully admit it, per Romper.

One more family detail has fans talking.

The Reported Family Name Change

Hahn and Sandler reportedly applied to add "Hahn" before the children's surname, per Sportskeeda. If approved, the kids would become Leonard Henry Hahn Sandler and Mae Marie Hahn Sandler.

The couple hasn't publicly explained the decision, and the outcome hasn't been confirmed. It's a private family choice, and a sweet nod to Hahn's own roots.

What's Next for the Sandler Family

With Leonard in his college years and Mae finishing high school, the Sandlers are entering a new chapter. Hahn and Sandler have kept their kids' lives largely private, and Hahn's candid parenting moments suggest that approach is working.
